Office of Research Administration Re-Structuring

September 14, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce an organizational restructuring within the Office of Research Administration (ORA).  Effective September 1, 2009 the former Office for the Protection of Research Subjects (OPRS) has been replaced by two offices focused separately on human and animal research administration:  the Office of the Human Research Protection Program (OHRPP) and the Office of Animal Research Oversight (OARO).

The OHRPP and OARO Directors will each report directly to Marcia Smith, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Administration, with a direct line to the Institutional Official, Vice Chancellor for Research Roberto Peccei, for compliance issues.

Kathy Wadsworth will serve as Director of OARO.  Ms. Wadsworth has served as Associate Director in charge of animal research administration requirements for over five years, successfully directing and overseeing the administrative operations supporting the animal research program and the Chancellor’s Animal Research Committee.

Sharon Friend will serve as Director of OHRPP.  Ms. Friend has served as HRPP Operations Director since June 2008 and led the successful UCLA effort to earn national accreditation of our Human Research Protection Program.  Before joining the UCLA research administration team, Ms. Friend developed and implemented the HRPP at the University of California, San Francisco.

This reorganization is part of the ongoing efforts led by ORA to streamline research administration operations, improve services, enhance communication and increase accountability.  While OHRPP and OARO contact information, including telephone numbers and addresses, will be unchanged, we will over the course of the next several months update websites and documentation to replace references to OPRS and reflect the new organizational identities.

We welcome your suggestions and comments on this reorganization as well as on other ORA initiatives.

Sincerely,

Roberto Peccei
Vice Chancellor for Research
  Marcia Smith
Associate Vice Chancellor
Research Administration
